La scienza finora ha dato spiegazioni lineari ai problemi più complessi, ottenendo risultati senz’altro ammirevoli. C’è però qualcosa che tendiamo a dimenticare, ossia che i dati non sono mai univoci
e che tra le pieghe dei numeri si nascondono infinite variabili che non vengono prese in considerazione, vuoi perché «disturbano» il risultato finale, vuoi perché proprio non le si vede. Eppure questa metà nascosta del mondo è responsabile di risultati inaspettati, che si palesano con una certa regolarità e sono «inspiegabili» per gli stessi esperti.
Con una buona dose di spavalderia, Michael Blastland esplora i retroscena della scienza e dell’informazione, invitandoci a diffidare delle risposte facili e a venire a patti con le forze invisibili che influenzano il mondo. Scopriamo così fino a che punto ci sfuggano gli aspetti caotici e casuali che determinano la realtà cui proviamo a dare un senso.
La metà nascosta ci mette davanti all’evidenza, a tratti sconcertante, di come sappiamo molto meno di ciò che crediamo. Non è necessariamente un male, spiega Blastland in questa piccola ode all’umiltà, perché esserne consapevoli è un ottimo punto di partenza per imparare di più.

The best part of this book was an opening page quote by Daniel Boorstin from Cleopatra's Nose: "The great menace to progress is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge."
