Carrie ha tutto ciò che potrebbe desiderare. È una produttrice televisiva al culmine della carriera ed è felicemente sposata con Adrian, un attraente e brillante sceneggiatore. Non ha mai voluto figli eppure, quando scopre di essere incinta, si rende conto che quel bambino è la chiave di volta che completerà la sua vita perfetta. L'unica preoccupazione di Carrie è doversi assentare dal lavoro. Per fortuna, però, ha trovato la sostituta ideale. Emma è giovane, intraprendente, volenterosa… forse fin troppo. In men che non si dica, s’installa nel suo ufficio e inizia a prendere decisioni in totale autonomia. Ma non è tutto. Con la scusa di voler diventare una sceneggiatrice, Emma passa moltissimo tempo sola con Adrian, approfittandone per chiedergli consigli di scrittura. E Adrian sembra più che felice di farle da mentore, al punto da concentrare ogni attenzione su di lei. Pian piano, in Carrie s'insinua il dubbio che Emma stia mirando a sostituirla in tutti i sensi. E il sospetto si trasforma in inquietante certezza quando scopre che Emma è stata licenziata dal suo incarico precedente perché aveva raccolto in segreto informazioni su Adrian. Ma Carrie non ha nessuna intenzione di permettere a quell'arrampicatrice sociale di rubarle ciò che ha costruito in anni di sacrifici. E, quando scopre Emma a frugare tra le carte del marito, per Carrie è l'ultima goccia…
