"Vanishing World" porta l'universo di Murata a un nuovo, audace livello, immaginando un Giappone in cui per contrastare il basso tasso di natalità, le ricerche sull'inseminazione artificiale sono progredite a tal punto che oggi tutti si riproducono unicamente in questo modo. Il sesso è ormai escluso dal matrimonio e relegato ai rapporti extra-coniugali. Ma Amane è cresciuta con una madre che le racconta favole sull'amore e il sesso nella coppia sposata, un concetto ormai obsoleto e considerato incestuoso. Per questa ragione, la ragazza viene schernita dai compagni e comincia a nutrire un certo astio verso la madre. Al contempo è attratta dal sesso, che pratica per la prima volta in quinta elementare col compagno Mizuuchi, mentre si innamora quasi esclusivamente di personaggi dei cartoni animati o di fantasia (che lei si ostina a chiamare "persone non umane" e non "personaggi").

Oh my, Sayaka Murata. You did that. I genuinely don't know how it's possible to fuck a book like that. This was a 4 star read from me, and at 97%, yes 4 minutes from the end of the book, it dropped to a 0.5. I truly believe that ending should be cut from the book.
