La libreria Natsuki è un luogo speciale: un negozio polveroso e solitario, dove gli amanti della lettura possono trovare, tra le pagine dei grandi capolavori di tutto il mondo, un'oasi di pace, un rifugio lontano dal frastuono della quotidianità. Quando il proprietario, uomo colto e appassionato, muore improvvisamente, il nipote Rintaro, un ragazzino timido e introverso, eredita la libreria. Il nonno si è preso cura di lui dopo la morte di sua madre e, ora che è scomparso, Rintaro deve imparare a fare a meno della sua saggezza dolce e pacata. La libreria è sull'orlo del fallimento: un'eredità pesante per il ragazzo, anche perché i segnali dal mondo sono piuttosto scoraggianti: poca gente è davvero interessata alla lettura. Un giorno, mentre Rintaro si crogiola malinconico nel ricordo del nonno, entra in libreria un gatto parlante. Nonostante le iniziali perplessità del ragazzino, il gatto lo convince a partire per una missione molto speciale: salvare i libri dalla loro scomparsa. Inizia così la storia di un'amicizia magica: un'avventura che li porterà a percorrere quattro diversi labirinti per risolvere altrettante questioni esistenziali sull'importanza della lettura e sulla forza, infinita e imperscrutabile, dell'amore. I find it hard to pinpoint exactly what I did not like about this book. I’m sad to admit it but I found it quite boring.
