I pionieri di Nikolaus Pevsner è un’opera chiave del pensiero architettonico contemporaneo. L’appassionata e puntuale ricostruzione della genesi e dello sviluppo del Movimento moderno, dal Palazzo di Cristallo del 1851 e dalla Casa Rossa costruita per William Morris nel 1859 alla fabbrica-modello proposta da Gropius e Meyer all’esposizione di Colonia del 1914, ha infatti permesso di mettere nella giusta luce l’intero sviluppo novecentesco. L’eredità di questi «pionieri» fu raccolta, nella «seconda età», da Le Corbusier, Mendelsohn, Mies van der Rohe e Oud; e poi, a partire dal 1930 e soprattutto nel secondo dopoguerra, da Alvar Aalto, Hans Scharoun, Eero Saarinen e altri maestri fino a John Johansen e Moshe Safdie, con la gigantesca figura di Frank Lloyd Wright e la sua intuizione di «habitat organico» a collegare la prima alla terza età con eccezionale coerenza. Tutti costoro si sono opposti alla banalità delle scatole prefabbricate in acciaio e vetro. Il progetto moderno, come suggerì Edoardo Persico, è stato per molto tempo «profezia», all’insegna del coraggio creativo e della costante ricerca di un rapporto organico tra l’uomo e il suo ambiente. Se l’architettura non vuole limitarsi a revival accademici o futili eclettismi, deve costantemente tornare a questi grandi maestri, per ritrovare il senso di una lezione che non ha perso la sua attualità. I pionieri dell’architettura moderna, pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1936 a Londra, dove Pevsner si era rifugiato per sfuggire al nazismo, è stato arricchito dall’autore fino al 1975 nelle successive edizioni, sia per quanto riguarda il testo sia per quanto riguarda la ricchissima iconografia.

This is a short easy read glossing over the key players from the 19th century who paid the foundation for modern architecture and design. Pevsner eloquently ties together architectural, artistic, social and industrial developments of the mid 19th century to trace a clear map of design movements that culminates in 20th century Modernism.
Interesting look at the perhaps not obvious through-line from the Arts & Crafts movement to Modernism in the early part of the 20th century, sent me searching for more info on some of the artists, architects and buildings discussed within

Two stars is generous for this wordy and poorly illustrated book that has a poor chronology. It is annoying when the author talks about items extensively that are not illustrated or with illustrations that lack scope. The subject is great.
