Jack Aubrey, al comando della piccola Surprise, parte da Gibilterra sulle tracce della fregata americana Norfolk, che veleggia al largo delle coste brasiliane e minaccia le baleniere di Sua Maestà nei mari del Sud. Dovrà farlo nel più breve tempo possibile, altrimenti sarà costretto a proseguire la caccia sino a Capo Horn, terrore di ogni marinaio e teatro di tempeste e di naufragi.
