Al principio c’è una fotografia. La trova per caso Glyn Peters, affermato storico del paesaggio, in una cartellina impolverata rimasta a lungo sepolta in un armadio. È la fotografia della moglie Kath, mancata anni prima: una Kath bella e gioiosa come sempre, ma sorpresa mano nella mano con il cognato Nick. È allora che nella vita misurata e ordinata di Glyn si apre una voragine. Accanto alla certezza del tradimento prendono corpo dubbi e domande che lo porteranno lontano nel passato, sulle tracce di una donna che è stata sua moglie, ma che forse non ha mai conosciuto davvero. Perché quella foto? Quando? E perché proprio lui, il cognato?
Penelope Lively racconta l’indagine personale di un uomo che solo dopo la morte della moglie si ostina a volerla conoscere: in una prosa asciutta e calibrata, l’autrice accompagna Glyn sulle tracce di Kath, prima bambina indecifrabile, poi ragazza bella e apparentemente spensierata, infine donna e moglie fuori da ogni possibile schema ma dotata di una sensuale, innata vitalità capace di sedurre chiunque la incontri. E la luce e le ombre gettate via via su di lei dai vari «testimoni» interrogati da Glyn – la sorella di Kath, anzitutto, costretta anch’essa dalle circostanze a fare un bilancio della sua vita e del suo matrimonio – saranno la sostanza di un intenso ritratto femminile, quello di una donna affascinante ma sfuggente, che dietro di sé ha lasciato soltanto frammenti della sua vita e della sua misteriosa energia vitale.

While the premise was totally interesting, the implementation of it was NOT. Plot was meandering (not in a good way), characters were almost all unsympathetic, and it was just sort of boring overall.
