Un mostro in forma umana viveva nelle fogne della città! È stato catturato ieri, dopo una lotta accanita in cui tre addetti alla manutenzione delle fogne sono rimasti seriamente feriti. Gli esperti ritengono che il mostro sia il primo di una nuova specie. «Potrebbero esserne nati a centinaia sotto i nostri piedi» ha detto uno scienziato. «L'unica soluzione è distruggerli prima che prendano il sopravvento». Il mostro viene tenuto in isolamento dove sarà sottoposto a numerosi test scientifici prima di essere eliminato. Ieri sera il Sindaco e il Consiglio sono stati sollecitati a non perdere altro tempo. Il tombino da cui l'intrepido Kevin Bilge ha raggiunto le fogne per affrontare il mostro. Ha suscitato indignazione l'appello alla cautela avanzato da alcuni politici. «Non dovremmo giudicare senza riflettere» ha detto un portavoce dell'opposizione. «Il Mostro è una vittima anche lui».

This is a wonderful exploration of the dangers of the press and its bias. Pullman integrates sections from The Daily Scrouge into the narrative which is HUGELY biased against Roger (the rat) and helps kids to see how newspapers always have an agenda when they print a story.

This is such a great read, and a great read-aloud. Pullman is such a skilled storyteller — just the right combination of dark and light, heart-aches and comfort, advanture and mystery, and of course, a final, satisfying solution.
