Will è in possesso della lama sottile, un misterioso coltello che permette il passaggio tra i mondi. Lyra però è al centro di un'antica profezia delle streghe e la Chiesa ha decretato la sua morte.
Will e Lyra sono coscienti di avere un compito importante da svolgere, ma non sanno quale sia: perché la profezia si avveri non dovranno obbedire a un destino predefinito, ma essere liberi di scegliere.
