"Divertirsi da morire" di Neil Postman è una presa di coscienza collettiva dei caratteri distopici che la società in cui viviamo sta assumendo. Lo scenario però non è quello descritto da George Orwell in 1984, quello dell'abolizione della democrazia, della coercizione e della sorveglianza, della repressione del dissenso con la violenza: l'ambientazione è piuttosto quella immaginata da Aldous Huxley nel suo "Il mondo nuovo", ovvero una distopia ben più insidiosa ed efficace, perché seducente, appagante, divertente. Nella società di Huxley la tecnologia in tutte le sue manifestazioni esercita un controllo totale della cultura, sulla politica e sull'economia, in un futuro distopico che non sembra così lontano dal nostro presente, dominato dalle grandi piattaforme web, dal capitalismo della sorveglianza e dalla politica dei tweet. Un futuro dal quale Postman ci aveva già messo in guardia, concludendo apocalitticamente nella prima edizione di questo libro, nel 1985, che "una società fondata sulla televisione è una società barbarica". L'avvento dei social, con la loro cultura del narcisismo e del sarcasmo come strumento di disgregazione sociale, sembra essere la naturale prosecuzione della sua profezia. Seguendo le traiettorie di Postman, non è lontano un futuro nel quale, nel nome dell'entertainment, una star di Tik Tok diventi presidente di una delle nostre democrazie: forse non ci apparirà come strano, ma, tuttalpiù, divertente. Well, yes, Mr Postman. You're undoubtedly right in much of your analysis. And I suppose it was prescient of you to be so right way back in 1985 when you wrote this book.
