Il rombo degli elicotteri squarcia il silenzio delle risaie. Phong ha avuto una vita durissima. Fin dalla nascita, ha subito i soprusi e le angherie delle persone. Perché lui è «meno della polvere», epiteto con cui vengono insultati i bambini nati dalle relazioni tra soldati americani e donne vietnamite. E Phong, con la sua pelle nera e i capelli ricci, ha sempre portato le proprie origini scritte in faccia. Eppure, adesso che ha quarant'anni, spera che quel marchio d'infamia possa valere per lui e i suoi figli un visto per gli Stati Uniti. E il suo cammino s’incrocerà con quello di Dan, un veterano tornato in Vietnam per esorcizzare i fantasmi del passato e fare i conti con un segreto che potrebbe distruggere il suo matrimonio…
È stata la guerra a segnare per sempre Trang, Phong e Dan, a costringerli a compiere scelte dolorosissime, che si ripercuotono sulle generazioni successive. Eppure sono proprio queste scelte a legare i loro destini, a permettere loro di superare le differenze e trovare una lingua comune, nella compassione e nella speranza di un futuro di pace.
