Prendendo come esempio Jamie Dimon, il presidente della JPMorgan Chase, una delle più grandi banche al mondo, Reich spiega come coloro che siedono al vertice della piramide sociale diffondano tutta una serie di miti sulla meritocrazia, sulla competitività nazionale, sulla responsabilità sociale delle imprese e sul "libero mercato" per distrarre i cittadini dagli osceni livelli di ricchezza dei nuovi "padroni dell'universo", dal controllo che esercitano sul sistema e dal fatto che le politiche che sostengono servono solo ad accrescere i loro profitti, a scapito della maggioranza. L'obiettivo di Reich non è quello di alimentare il cinismo e l'antipolitica, ma piuttosto quello di demistificare il sistema e mostrare come esso possa essere radicalmente trasformato, per far sì che la democrazia torni a servire gli interessi dei molti e non solo dei pochi.
