Sinossi
Tutto inizia con una cena di compleanno fra giornalisti in un ristorante affacciato sul Tamigi. A tavola, fra battute, arguzie e discussioni vivaci, ci sono il cronista investigativo Ben Harper, il suo capo Madeline Wilson e il padre di lei. Vino e ottima cucina. Ma la serata ha in serbo tutt’altro.
A tarda ora, Madeline si congeda per rientrare a casa a bordo della sua Mercedes con autista. E da quel momento sembra sparire nel nulla. L’indomani non si presenta agli appuntamenti e non risponde al telefono. Finché al padre non arriva un messaggio che lo raggela: Abbiamo tua figlia. Chiama la polizia ed è morta.
L’anziano chiede subito l’aiuto di Ben, che non ha scelta: deve scoprire chi ha rapito il suo direttore, la donna a cui deve molto della propria carriera. Qualcosa, in questa vicenda, lo riporta a un’inchiesta che Madeline aveva firmato dieci anni prima e che aveva destato molto scalpore. Una vicenda ancora densa di domande senza risposte. E che coinvolge persone insospettabili. Persone molto vicine.
Ben dovrà usare tutto il proprio ingegno, perché Madeline potrebbe non essere la sola persona in pericolo. E più i secondi passano, più cresce il rischio che la più importante delle indagini di Ben Harper fallisca.

ten seconds is also about the length of overall attention i’ve given this. couldn’t tell you a single thing about it. the narrator had a nice voice though. so that’s where i’m at mentally.

I'm a big fan of the Ben Harper series, but I have to admit that I initially struggled quite a bit with this third book. It felt somewhat slow to me and as if very little was happening. Also featuring Dani, Miranda, East, Sarah etc etc who all show up in the previous books It definitely helps to have read the previous. I felt lost at times with the many many characters. This us the 3rd novel in series. The characters are just as well loved and written drip feeding a narrative. As always there are multiple stories different timelines which come together at the end.
