Londra. Tra le case ai civici 77 e 79 di Eastbourne Road c’è un giardino. Non è facile immaginarlo perché è solo un cumulo di erbacce abbandonato. Nessuno si occupa di quel piccolo terreno, non ha un proprietario. Vi si affacciano le porte delle due case che lo delimitano. Qui abitano, detestandosi, da una parte Bernice, una madre single che organizza le sue giornate in modo maniacale e cerca di tenere a bada il figlio Sebastian, sempre impegnato a combinare guai. Dall’altra Winston, che sta affrontando la fine della relazione con il suo fidanzato e vorrebbe soltanto soffrire in pace. Da qualche tempo, senza un apparente motivo, entrambi hanno cominciato a ricevere per posta strane fotografie: sono le immagini del giardino che hanno sotto casa così come si presentava molti anni prima. Colpiti dalla bellezza di quelle immagini, Winston e Bernice decidono di sottoscrivere idealmente una tregua tra loro, di deporre le armi, di infilarsi i guanti e darsi al giardinaggio. A mano a mano che lo dissodano, il giardino comincia a uscire dal suo lungo letargo e loro due si ritrovano a dissotterrare vecchi segreti e antichi dolori. Lentamente, capiscono che insieme, forse, potranno darsi la forza per affrontare il proprio passato. Allora sì che anche loro torneranno davvero a fiorire.

The Reading List was such a brilliant read and I was itching to get my hands on this. Sadly, this didn't quite meet the mark for me. Slow pace, characters I wasn't rooting for. So wanted to love this, but it didn't go anywhere for me.
