Considerato un caposaldo imprescindibile della filosofia contemporanea, L'essere e il nulla di Jean-Paul Sartre non è solo lo storico manifesto dell'esistenzialismo francese: fin dalla sua prima comparsa nel 1943, si è subito imposto come il testo necessario per chiunque voglia scoprire la forza e l'angoscia suscitate dalla libertà. In contrasto con la lunga tradizione speculativa della filosofia occidentale, Sartre non ha timore ad affermare che l'uomo non è definibile proprio perché al suo principio non è niente, solo col tempo sarà. L'uomo infatti non è altro da ciò che fa, non è nient'altro di quello che progetta di essere: l'esistenza precede sempre l'essenza. Con queste asserzioni il filosofo parigino ci restituisce una nuova idea di umanità, come sottolinea Massimo Recalcati nella prefazione al volume: «Affermare che l'esistenza precede l'essenza significa affermare che non esiste una natura umana, un'idea a priori di umanità alla quale l'uomo dovrebbe conformarsi per essere un uomo, che nessuna essenza universale può precedere l'esistenza singolare ». Per l'uomo di Sartre, «un Dio mancato», il valore dell'esistenza allora dipenderà esclusivamente da quello che essa saprà fare di se stessa, dunque dai suoi atti, dalla sua responsabilità. La libertà si rivelerà in ogni sua azione, in ogni suo momento.
