Jacaranda Leven è nata e cresciuta a Los Angeles e non c'è un'altra città al mondo in cui immagina di poter vivere. Fin da piccola ha imparato a solcare le onde su una tavola da surf, l'oceano come compagno di giochi e maestro nell'arte di trovare un equilibrio quando tutto intorno è in costante movimento. Si mantiene proprio dipingendo tavole da surf, ma la sua vitalità sfacciata le permette di salire sulla "chiatta", un'isola di ricchezza a cui appartengono solo persone bellissime, dedite al divertimento. Quando compie ventotto anni però Jacaranda comincia a sentire il peso della precarietà e decide di sfidare sé stessa dedicandosi alla scrittura. La conseguenza è una proposta di viaggio a New York, lontano dal mare, tra persone che vivono per lavorare. Con una prosa che riesce a essere insieme onirica e carnale Eve Babitz descrive la vita e gli amori di una donna che (forse) le assomiglia al ritmo incalzante di tango, un ballo che è "un abbraccio popolare tra seminatori di erbacce senza rimpianti".

Eve is just too good at what she does
this book rules because it's about this perfect girl who is extremely beautiful and interesting and smart and hot and universally adored and it's also autobiographical. goals, really. this is actually not eve's finest - normally she's funny enough that you can forgive her for knowing how charming and Leggi tutto
I really, really wanted to like this book. It came so highly recommended. However, by modern standards it reads like some stream of consciousness fever dream, like it's poorly edited. She has a beautiful authorial voice, but my god is it tedious to read.
Don’t be fooled by gays & martinis
I didn't get it. I'm not even sure if there was something to get. I HATED jacaranda. In my opinion she was so problematic and self absorbed when she was a walking disaster. The self pity was REAL.
