La parola è il fulcro attorno al quale ruota tutta l’opera di Mallarmé: una parola sensuale, evocatrice, densa di mistero e suggestioni, che allude più che descrivere, che annoda immagini e metafore in una lingua ricercata, al limite dell’oscurità, tesa fino a trasformarsi in partitura musicale nelle sperimentazioni più ardite, come la prosa ritmica di Un colpo di dadi non abolirà mai il caso (1897). Alla crisi del lirismo romantico, alla scoperta del Nulla, Mallarmé risponde con la sua visione del poeta demiurgo che aspira a riprodurre l’architettura dell’universo, con la ricerca ossessiva dell’opera totale, quel Libro ideale in cui ricostituire il mondo intero al quale dedicò per tutta la vita le sue migliori energie creative: una sfida estetica e metafisica alla legge del caso che governa l’esistenza e alle possibilità del linguaggio, vissuta tra ansia di esprimere l’assoluto e sentimento della propria inadeguatezza. Questo altissimo, sofferto concetto di arte è la grande eredità che il maudit Mallarmé ha consegnato al Novecento e che risuona in tante voci della poesia contemporanea, da Valéry agli ermetici.

Mallarme’s poetry, I believe, unfortunately does not translate its true excellence into English. Focused on aesthetics, Mallarme included in his poetic formulations wonderful symbolism, which does translate, as well as aesthetic form that focused on spacing, and the image of the poem as a whole.
