Nel 1923 Robert Lohkamp guadagnava duecento miliardi di marchi al mese. Faceva l'addetto alla pubblicità di una fabbrica tedesca di articoli di gomma. Veniva pagato due volte al giorno e si precipitava continuamente nei negozi a comperare qualcosa prima che il marco valesse la metà. La vita movimentata al tempo della grande inflazione. Dopo un impiego alle ferrovie in Turingia e un lavoretto come pianista al Café International, alla fine degli anni Venti Robert Lohkamp non può, tuttavia, dire di passarsela male. Lavora alla "Koster & Co.", l'officina meccanica aperta in una vecchia baracca da Otto Koster e Gottfried Lenz, i commilitoni con cui ha condiviso gli orrori della Grande Guerra. Koster, il comandante della compagnia, ha fatto il pilota d'aviazione, si è dato alle gare automobilistiche, ha frequentato qualche corso all'università prima di votarsi a quello cui è da sempre destinato: riparare automobili. Lenz invece ha girovagato qualche annetto per l'America del Sud, poi è tornato all'ovile o, meglio, alla turbolenta vita tedesca della fine degli anni Venti. Il lavoro all'officina è duro ma Lohkamp, Koster e Lenz sono ancora giovani, sani e forti. Certo di sera riaffiorano le immagini del passato coi loro occhi di morte, ma a quello come antidoto c'è l'acquavite. O, come accade da un po' di tempo a questa parte per Robert Lohkamp, c'è Patrice Hollmann. È apparsa un giorno al seguito di un eccentrico industriale, il proprietario di una fabbrica di cappotti.
