Il libro di Joan Tronto - esperta di studi di genere e teoria femminista rappresenta un tentativo di richiamare l'attenzione pubblica sulla rilevanza della cura e la condizione di chi tradizionalmente se ne occupa: le donne e gli appartenenti a gruppi socialmente emarginati. Dopo aver offerto una ricostruzione storico-culturale del processo che ha portato all'esclusione della cura dalla sfera pubblica e alla segregazione delle donne nella sfera privata con l'emergere, nel '700, d'un insieme di confini morali che escludono dalla considerazione politica l'attenzione alla fragilità dell'esistenza umana, Tronto passa a una valutazione della società contemporanea, a suo parere colpevole di una ripartizione asimmetrica degli oneri di cura, che asserve il lavoro di alcune persone - in genere le donne e le minoranze - al soddisfacimento dei bisogni altrui. L'autrice s'oppone all'idea tipica del cosiddetto femminismo culturale che la cura sia espressione d'una moralità essenzialmente femminile. Al contrario, una società democratica, che voglia trattare ogni persona con eguale considerazione e rispetto, deve porre un'etica della cura al centro della teoria e dell'azione politica.

Good, accessible material about care ethics and the movement into its necessary placement as/within a political framework. My own philosophy differs a smidge, but that doesn't take away from this seminal work. Also really good for those critical of the notion of a feminine morality.
