Quando, nel 1859, Dostoevskij ottenne il permesso di rientrare dalla deportazione nella Russia europea, aveva bisogno di qualcosa di clamoroso per riaffermare la propria posizione nel panorama letterario dell'epoca. Fu così che nella primavera del 1860 si dedicò alla stesura di un roman-feuilleton pieno di situazioni estreme, spregiudicate, delle quali si parlava con relativa disinvoltura, incentrate sul tema della fanciulla offesa e vittima di individui senza scrupoli. Sedotte e abbandonate: questo è il destino delle donne in "Umiliati e offesi". Ma anche maledette dai propri padri. L'occhio di Dostoevskij si sofferma ad analizzare la relazione padre/figlia, e lo fa tramutandola nel nucleo portante della narrazione: sono ben tre le coppie di padri e figlie che si avvicendano nelle pagine del romanzo, portando avanti ciascuna una linea narrativa e una modalità esistenziale che conducono a una conclusione differente. Le vicende sono tenute assieme dalla presenza del narratore Ivan Petrovic, che per tutto il romanzo si sposta frenetico da una casa all'altra, fungendo da testimone oculare e, alla fine, da vero e proprio deus ex machina. In questa figura si manifesta il tormento di Dostoevskij, giunto al punto di svolta della propria creatività e alla ricerca di un nuovo modello di narratore.
