Come ogni anno, si celebra il Natale a Warbeck Hall. Il vecchio Lord è al lumicino e ne è consapevole; non può contare sul fatto che il figlio Robert, un esaltato nazistoide spiantato, possa caricarsi sulle spalle il futuro del venerando casato. Gli altri parenti prossimi sono tutti al castello per le feste: c'è Julius, il cugino, un ministro del governo, e Camilla, la nipote invano innamorata di Robert. Presenti in quei giorni sono pure due estranei: il dottor Wenceslaus Bottwink, un erudito che sta conducendo una ricerca sulla magione, e la signora Carstairs, moglie vociante ed ambiziosa del più stretto collaboratore del ministro. Il maggiordomo Briggs, gelido e impeccabile secondo l'uso, sta lì a osservare tutto come se assistesse a un dramma tragicomico che potrebbe intitolarsi: «La fine dei Warbeck». Ma anche lui ha un brutto segreto che lo lega a quel clima di tensione, ai tanti segnali che presagiscono qualcosa di sinistro. Intanto nevica, nevica, nevica. Tra gli anni Quaranta e i Cinquanta del Novecento Cyril Hare scrisse una serie di gialli nel più puro, quasi manieristico, stile inglese, che presto divenne un classico di successo con tutti gli elementi tipici al loro posto. Rileggerli oggi - con la loro grazia scenografica, con la lineare geometria d'intreccio, con la loro suspense spontanea - offre a chi ama il genere un'altra piacevole prova della solidità di una grande tradizione letteraria.
