Richard F. Burton (1821-1890) è uno dei personaggi più affascinanti dell'epoca delle grandi esplorazioni europee dell'Ottocento. Ha attraversato i continenti, ha visitato città, studiato popoli e imparato le loro lingue (ne parlava correntemente più di trenta, e in particolare parlava perfettamente l'arabo). Fu in Africa con Speke alla ricerca delle sorgenti del Nilo, in Nord America per conoscere le comunità dei Mormoni, fu console britannico a Fernando Po in Africa occidentale, poi in Brasile, a Damasco e a Trieste. Ma la sua impresa memorabile è probabilmente quella raccontata in questo libro: nel 1853, vestito da pellegrino afgano, visita la città santa della Mecca: prima di lui, dal Medioevo, solo una decina di occidentali erano riusciti a penetrare nel recinto sacro della Kaaba. Questo viaggio avventuroso e estremamente rischioso è narrato con la tranquillità e con la semplicità che solo Burton possedeva. Fu anche traduttore delle Mille e una notte e del Kama Sutra, studiò gli usi e i costumi arabi, componendo le Note antropologiche alle Mille e una notte, edite da Ibis con il titolo L'Oriente islamico.
