Iniziano così le peregrinazioni di Shand nel subcontinente indiano e le sue argute descrizioni di templi, villaggi, usanze che fanno di questo libro un affascinante racconto d'avventura e, al tempo stesso, un tenero romanzo d'amore. Lungo le strade che dal Golfo del Bengala portano a Sonepur, attraverso il Gange, fino al grande bazaar degli elefanti, Shand apprende infatti che a un inglese in India può anche capitare di innamorarsi del suo elefante, se l'elefante ha, come Tara, una personalità dolce, femminile e seducente.
