Nell’estate del 1940, un ragazzo di undici anni ascoltò il padre che leggeva e spiegava ai fratelli maggiori l’Inferno di Dante; le due estati seguenti toccò a Purgatorio e Paradiso. “Le cicale concertavano nel fico, il fumo della Macedonia di mio padre sbandava rampicando per l’aria, le nostre motosiluranti solcavano invitte il golfo della Sirte, e io, praticamente, non capivo nulla.” Mezzo secolo più tardi proprio quel ragazzo, Vittorio Sermonti, avrebbe letto e spiegato Dante ai microfoni della radio e in più di cinquecento
letture pubbliche. Così è nato questo “racconto-commento” della Divina Commedia, che si poneva un obbiettivo solo apparentemente modesto: “consentire a un qualunque italiano dotato di cultura media, intelligenza e un po’ di passione di percorrere il più gran libro scritto in italiano senza interrompere continuamente l’avventura per approvvigionarsi di notizie, delucidazioni e varianti nei battiscopa di note, che spesso rasentano il soffitto della pagina”. È un obbiettivo in realtà ambiziosissimo, e per raggiungerlo era necessaria la prosa insieme raffinata e colloquiale, accurata e ironica di Sermonti.
