All'episodio è dedicato l'altro scritto qui raccolto, "La disobbedienza civile" (1849), che, trascendendo le ragioni contingenti, offre riflessioni di estrema attualità sulla natura della democrazia e sul rapporto tra individuo e collettività. Amati da schiere di letterati e attivisti, da Hawthorne a Eliot a Martin Luther King, questi due celeberrimi scritti di Thoreau sono vivificati da una scrittura tanto immediata e semplice quanto meditata e ricca di fascino.
