Se riteniamo che la qualità dell’ambiente in cui viviamo sia fondamentale per il nostro benessere, non possiamo non interrogarci sul rapporto tra architettura e felicità. Ma da dove cominciare? Oggi, a differenza dei secoli passati, siamo consapevoli dell’impossibilità di individuare una misura del bello assoluta e riproponibile all’infinito, senza tener conto delle tradizioni locali e della sensibilità dei committenti. Se le ville palladiane rappresentano un ineguagliato modello di equilibrio architettonico, una recente villa costruita a Londra secondo gli stessi canoni suscita più sconcerto che ammirazione. E non erano affatto contenti i signori Savoye, per cui Le Corbusier progettò la famosa villa di Poissy: il capolavoro dell’architetto modernista si rivelò ben presto inabitabile. D’altro canto, invece, accostamenti inediti di forme, materiali e stili possono essere fonte di piacere e serenità. Attraverso una ricca casistica e insieme facendo ricorso alla verve del narratore, De Botton indaga, nella molteplicità delle sue sfaccettature, l’influenza del design sull’essere umano, design che suscita sensazioni e riflessioni, modifica l’umore, fornisce stimoli al miglioramento. Imparando a ritrovare in edifici e oggetti doti e qualità presenti anche nell’uomo avremo dunque l’occasione di conoscere meglio noi stessi. È questa, dopotutto, la fonte della vera felicità.
