Il detective Mike Hoolihan ha un fisico corpulento da camionista, i capelli biondo tinto e una voce cavernosa per il troppo fumo. Il detective Mike è una donna. Una donna grassa, brutta, ex alcolizzata. Un'amica d'infanzia, Jennifer, si è sparata tre colpi di una calibro 22 in bocca. Cosi lei, che vorrebbe dimenticare la storia al più presto, ci si ritrova invischiata fino al collo. E comincia a fare strane scoperte: errori inspiegabili sul lavoro, frequentazioni ambigue, depressioni... Martin Amis gioca con le convenzioni del thriller per affrontare, nel suo modo sornione e disincantato, interrogativi che vanno ben al di là di una storia "nera": lo spazio - la relazione - che corre tra gli eventi minimi della vita quotidiana e le leggi che governano l'universo: le misteriose tensioni conflittuali, il rapporto di affetti, invidie, le feroci rivalità che sembrano nascondersi in ogni amicizia.

My first Martin Amis read blows me away… a perfectly crafted noir novel about a female detective called Mike investigating the suicide of a woman who appeared to have everything. Exquisitely written. 8 out of 12.
