Da quando Conan Doyle ha dimostrato che del corpo, in un'indagine ben condotta, si può tranquillamente fare a meno, molti autori di storie poliziesche si sono divertiti a mettere i propri protagonisti in condizione di apparente disagio fisico. Ultimo, ma solo in ordine di tempo, è arrivato Roberto Bolano, che in questo romanzo ha inventato Auxilio Lacouture, una straordinaria anti-Nero Wolfe. Se per via della stazza il detective di Rex Stout abbandona a fatica, e comunque malvolentieri, la sua serra, Auxilio, che peraltro è magrissima, non può semplicemente uscire dai bagni della facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia di Città del Messico, dove la polizia ha appena fatto irruzione a caccia di sovversivi. Siamo nel settembre del 1968, cioè nel cuore di una stagione rivoluzionaria rispetto alla quale i moti europei sono un pranzo di gala, appena un po' rumoroso: e quello che Auxilio tenta febbrilmente di ricostruire è un atroce delitto politico - il primo anello, si scoprirà, di una catena ininterrotta di crimini. Un'immagine dopo l'altra, lo spazio fisico si dissolve, mentre la voce di Auxilio diventa quella di Bolano, e attraverso una galleria di personaggi indimenticabili ridisegna la geografia, immaginaria e persine troppo reale, di un intero continente.
