Questa tragedia fu composta da Euripide probabilmente tra il 427 e il 425 a. C. Nel testo si intrecciano temi di fondo spesso affrontati da Euripide: le conseguenze della guerra, che si manifestano anche in un'alterazione di equilibri famigliari prima stabili; e la condizione della donna, soprattutto in relazione al problema della discendenza. La figura di Andromaca, legata nel mito al ruolo di moglie di Ettore, si rinnova in questa tragedia a contatto con una situazione meno nota, ma mantiene anche, di fronte alla catastrofe che si è abbattuta su di lei, i tratti (coraggio, costanza, amore materno) che sono caratterizzanti del suo personaggio.
