L’ex agente del SAS britannico Nick Stone si è ritirato in Svizzera e sta meditando di sposare Silky, che ignora la sua vera identità. Ma anche lui non sa molte cose di lei. All’improvviso, Silky scompare. Qualche ricerca, e Nick scopre che è andata in Congo al seguito di un’organizzazione umanitaria per aiutare le vittime dei massacri che avvengono in quel Paese. Nick c’è già stato nel 1985 per addestrare le truppe di Mobutu contro i ribelli e conosce la ferocia di cui quegli uomini sono capaci. Adesso la situazione è ancora più drammatica: da un anno l’Esercito di resistenza del Signore (LRA), in cui sono stati arruolati anche dei bambini, terrorizza e uccide la popolazione per impadronirsi delle miniere e nessuno sembra riuscire a fermare l’eccidio. Nick non può far finta di niente: parte per raggiungere Silky. E questa volta non dovrà affrontare soltanto i pericoli e le insidie di una nuova missione: dovrà fare i conti con il proprio passato, con gli innocenti che molti anni prima non è riuscito a salvare e il cui ricordo, come un tormento, bussa alla porta della sua coscienza. Ma perché Silky è andata proprio in Congo? Chi si nasconde dietro questa realtà che impedisce ai bambini di restare bambini? Chi vuole mettere le mani sul metallo più quotato alla Borsa di Londra? Purtroppo nulla è come sembra, e Nick scoprirà gente spietata e corrotta, disposta a tutto per il dio Denaro.

Like so often in case of this genre, there is right and wrong way to read this book. And the right way is very simple - never mind the utterly rudiculous setup, get through it as quickly as possible. Definitely the best one so far. As war novels go this is second only to For Whom The Bell Tolls. The Congolese children forced to kill their parents and take up arms was devastating, especially because it’s really happening. I’ll think twice before upgrading any electronics and make sure to bring in Leggi tutto
