L'edizione originale dell'"Arte del colore", pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1961, era il frutto dell'attività di una vita intera dedicata al colore. Una summa delle intuizioni, delle scoperte e delle esperienze di un pittore e di un formidabile didatta. Già mentre sceglieva le tavole da inserire nell'opera maggiore, Johannes Itten lavorava al progetto di una "piccola teoria del colore". Intendeva condensare le leggi e le possibilità espressive del colore in un libro ridotto, indirizzato prevalentemente agli studenti e a tutti i lettori appassionati di questa affascinante tematica. Alla morte dell'autore, Annaliese Itten fu incaricata di selezionare dodici tavole dell'edizione originale per una mostra itinerante sul Bauhaus. A partire da questa selezione, ha preso forma definitiva questa edizione ridotta, che raccoglie e distilla le lezioni sul colore, sul suo uso e le sue infinite combinazioni, portando a compimento la "piccola teoria" voluta e progettata da uno dei più influenti maestri del Bauhaus.

Parts of this book were completely eye opening for me, and other parts were difficult to understand the first time around. yes, it was a required text at one point, and yes, even art students tend to hate colour theory -- but that doesn't change the fact that this book opened my eyes to so many things about colour that, although simple, were often overlooked.
