Che il nostro pensiero venga influenzato dalla lingua che parliamo, ovvero che sia la grammatica a condizionare la nostra visione del mondo, è una delle grandi ipotesi della linguistica contemporanea. Benjamin Lee Whorf ne condivide la paternità con Edward Sapir, e ai loro nomi è legato il cosiddetto «relativismo linguistico», che trova importanti formulazioni nei saggi di Whorf qui raccolti. All'inizio questa prospettiva di ricerca si è attirata addirittura l’accusa di sovversione, perché osava postulare che alcuni popoli ritenuti «primitivi» avessero una struttura linguistica più ingegnosa di quelli evoluti, rovesciando un preconcetto diffuso. Ma non ha avuto vita facile neppure in seguito, quando si è imposta la tendenza a studiare gli universali del linguaggio, piuttosto che gli aspetti distintivi delle singole lingue.
Ciononostante, con il determinismo lingua/cultura sostenuto da Whorf hanno dovuto continuare a confrontarsi fino a oggi tutte le teorie del funzionamento del linguaggio. E sono tuttora esemplari e ricche di implicazioni inesplorate le sue indagini sulle categorie grammaticali e sulla formazione delle parole.

English not being my native language, this book was a bit hard to read and took me longer than it usually takes me to read a book with this amount of pages.
