Un giovane prete appena ordinato viene inviato come parroco ad Ambricourt, piccolo villaggio francese. Pur non essendo benvoluto dai suoi parrocchiani, affronta la sua missione spinto da una vocazione semplice e pura. Come strumento di sfogo ai suoi pensieri inizia a scrivere un diario, in cui annota tutte le sue preoccupazioni e i suoi turbamenti. Sfinito da una malattia devastante, il giovane prete riuscirà ad affrontare tutte le sfide che gli si pongono innanzi, sempre guidato da uno spirito di comprensione e aiuto. Dal libro di Bernanos è stato tratto il film omonimo di Robert Bresson del 1950. "Ieri sera ero andato a coricarmi da bravo. Il sonno non arrivava. Ho resistito a lungo alla tentazione di alzarmi, di riprendere il diario ancora una volta. Come mi è caro! L'idea stessa di lasciarlo qui, durante un'assenza tuttavia così breve, mi è letteralmente insopportabile".

I struggled to get into this and then truly loved it. I can see why it is considered a Christian classic. The humility of this lovely, awkward, and young priest, his love of his people make this book real and lovely.
