Carol, Anna, Bonnie. Madre, figlia e nipote. In questa saga familiare sull'amore e su una dolorosa eredità, tre generazioni di donne si parlano e si cercano attraverso il tempo. Carol si muove nel mondo come distratta dalla vita: c'è un'energia che la spinge altrove e che ha il sapore liquido dei fiumi. Bonnie è l'ultima della stirpe: non sa quasi nulla della madre e della nonna, ma sa che nel loro passato c'è un segreto inconfessato, che la riguarda. Anna è in mezzo tra loro, come un diaframma: un ponte sensoriale tra la storia della madre e il destino della figlia. A partire dalle loro storie, che si incrociano e allontanano nel loro fluire, Alice Birch dà vita a una scrittura ambiziosa e originale. Come una partitura musicale, divisa in tre ambienti corrispondenti alle linee narrative delle protagoniste, "Anatomia di un suicidio" segue un doppio andamento: diacronico, muovendosi lungo i tre assi temporali della vita delle protagoniste; simultaneo, con le tre storie che accadono in contemporanea, come in un grande affresco. Arricchito dalla prefazione di Concita De Gregorio, questo libro ci spinge a confrontarci con il lato meno visibile dei rapporti familiari: quel groviglio sottile di non detti e gesti mancati in cui il desiderio e la proiezione degli altri danno vita a una gabbia da cui fuggire sembra impossibile.

It's particularly difficult to judge this play on the page, because reading it is such a different experience, I would imagine, than seeing it staged. I know I like to brand myself as a sad book enjoyer™️ and so it feels slightly caricatural that I picked up this book and gave it 5 stars but this was. So. Good. I want to see this done as an actual production so the storylines really have their time to overlap and intertwine like intended. Regardless, this is an incredibly heart wrenching but inventive concept that can come across as slow but also somehow intense at the same time.

Devastating and yet tenderly funny. Structurally astonishing. Almost more of an orchestration than simply a play. I can imagine that seeing this play fully staged would be staggering.

Anatomy of Suicide is probably my 2020's favourite reading.
