Sul giovane Tarare se ne dicono tante. Pare che abbia divorato ogni sorta di creatura: oggetti, animali, perfino una bambina. Ma lasciamo a lui l'onere di raccontare la sua storia. Nato nelle campagne francesi a fine Settecento, figlio bastardo di una giovane nubile, rimane orfano di padre il giorno stesso in cui nasce; per mantenerlo, la madre comincia a prostituirsi e presto gli dà una sorellina. Cresce nella miseria più crudele, Tarare, finché, quando è ormai un ragazzo, il contrabbandiere che vive con la madre non lo costringe a fuggire. È proprio in questo momento che in lui accade qualcosa di strano: un appetito insaziabile, sconfinato, mostruoso inizia a perseguitarlo. Non lo abbandonerà mai. Solo al mondo, privo di qualsiasi scopo, costantemente attanagliato dalla fame, Tarare intraprenderà una lunga, disperata peregrinazione attraverso la Francia, che lo vedrà unirsi a una combriccola di ladri nelle vesti di fenomeno da baraccone grazie alle sue abbuffate, e poi giungere a Parigi, dove si aggregherà alle truppe rivoluzionarie nella speranza di essere nutrito. A guidarlo in questo incredibile viaggio, soltanto una vana, segreta speranza: quella di ricongiungersi prima o poi con l'amata madre.

Most assuredly my sort of book so firstly, thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. For reasons unknown (except perhaps the oddity of Tarare's disposition) it reminded me of Suskind's brilliant Perfume. The reason it reminded me of Candide is probably only because it is set in France (its at least 30 years
This is somehow both the most beautiful and ugly piece of work I have ever read.
Not for the easily troubled. This is by far the oddest book I have read in as long as I can remember. It had bits of very dark, very funny humour and very touching emotive parts too. If you want that "Jesus what did I just read" feeling. This is 100% for you.
