Nella Londra di un futuro prossimo, un'impiegata pubblica viene coinvolta in un misterioso progetto governativo che raccoglie "espatriati" da epoche diverse con il fine di testare i limiti del viaggio nel tempo sugli esseri umani. Il suo compito è quello di fare da "ponte", ovvero agevolare l'adattamento del soggetto che le viene affidato. Il suo espatriato è noto come "1847": si tratta di Graham Gore, un ufficiale di Marina che nel 1847 partecipò alla famosa - e sfortunata - spedizione artica guidata da sir John Franklin. I "ponti" sono istruiti a non sovraccaricare gli espatriati di troppe informazioni perché l'obiettivo principale dell'esperimento è vedere se siano in grado di adattarsi con successo a un'epoca storica diversa, e se la transizione provochi in loro un cambiamento significativo. Inizialmente disorientato, Graham Gore si trova a vivere con il suo "ponte" - una donna single abituata a cavarsela da sola -, e a confrontarsi con oggetti e concetti misteriosi quali "lavatrice", "Spotify" e il "crollo dell'Impero Britannico". Tuttavia, Gore è ricettivo e si adatta rapidamente, e, nel corso di una lunga e afosa estate, lui e la donna passano dall'imbarazzo all'amicizia a un'appassionata relazione sentimentale. Ma quando emergono le vere intenzioni del progetto che li ha uniti, i due protagonisti devono fare i conti con le loro scelte e il loro futuro.

I loved this. I especially enjoyed her beautiful turns of phrase, and the way she writes dialog.
