A more accurate name for this book would be "A Political History of Venice" seeing as that was the author's focus. It acts more as a window into how a 19th century Venetian saw their city rather than a text for lay people. Still enlightening in many ways if not very applicable to the average tourist Leggi tutto
Does exactly what it says on the tin. Pros: Quick and easy to read (I finished this in less than a day) Cons: Too brief to allow for much in the way of nuance, feels v biased but difficult to assess. A good starting point in any event.
“L’amore per la patria non svaniva mai, a Venezia. Sorta come incanto dalle acque, già cominciava a essere una città monumentale”
I think that this book’s translation is very sloppy, and therefore it does not read fluidly in English. I found it hard to follow, and even harder to keep up with the pace of the book - when they say brief, they really do mean brief. Overall, I wish I’d spent the time and money on a larger, in depth Leggi tutto
I thought this book was badly written, but then I found out that it was written in 1873, and since it was translated from Italian, it makes sense that it doesn't read very well. The author assumes that the reader already has a basic knowledge of the history of Venice, which I don't, so I wouldn't re Leggi tutto
I got this book while visiting Venice. Definitely a very brief history. The book dives more into specific political figures instead of the bigger ideas and influences I was hoping for. The book was a quick read and offered a few useful bits of information.
It’s not a book for an average tourist, is full of political details and I had to search a lot to understand the concepts. I liked but I am sure some persons won’t dig in the history like me and will find difficult
