Winner racconta come un piccolo paese abbia avviato la rivoluzione del football moderno e in Johan Cruijff abbia trovato il massimo esponente di quella genialità nevrotica, il giocatore e poi l'allenatore simbolo. Cruijff è il giovane che non rispetta le regole e sul campo di calcio fa quello che i giovani Provos facevano per le strade nell'Olanda degli anni Sessanta. Ma l'autore ci mostra che il ribelle e i suoi compagni tanto si opponevano quanto portavano avanti, innovandola, la tradizione. Perché quella modernissima concezione del calcio fondata sullo sfruttamento e il controllo dello spazio di gioco proseguiva, in nuovi modi, la secolare battaglia degli olandesi per strappare terre al mare, e la geometrica perfezione dei quadri di Mondrian ritornava, in diversa forma, nei «Tulipani» su un prato erboso.

This is a very good, but fundamentally flawed book. It is an easy/fun read with above-average intelligence w/r/t reporting&thought.
