Nel tentativo di superare l’omicidio dell’amica del cuore, Zoe lascia New York e si trasferisce a Berlino grazie a una borsa di studio. Qui ritrova Hailey, già sua compagna alla scuola d’arte, alla quale si appoggia completamente stringendo un’amicizia intensa e poco equilibrata. La differenza tra le due ragazze, infatti, non potrebbe essere più evidente: tanto Zoe è priva di scopo e influenzabile quanto Hailey è egocentrica e sicura di sé, idolatra Andy Warhol e Britney Spears e vuole fare della propria vita un’opera d’arte. A complicare la situazione ci sono le stranezze dell’appartamento in cui vivono – rumori insoliti e voci che non si sa da dove provengano – di proprietà di una scrittrice di thriller. Hailey e Zoe si convincono che la donna le stia spiando, forse per trovare materiale per i suoi romanzi. Decidono allora di giocare al suo stesso gioco, cercando di essere loro a determinare la narrazione: organizzano party esclusivi all’insegna dell’eccesso e presto tutta la Berlino del circuito artistico e giovanile fa a gara per ottenere un invito. Le notti diventano sempre più frenetiche e fuori controllo e Zoe, che cerca se stessa anche indossando i vestiti delle amiche, inizia a chiedersi quale storia stia vivendo e come andrà a finire… In un crescendo di tensione e colpi di scena, nel suo primo romanzo Calla Henkel esplora il tema dell’amicizia femminile, dei legami tossici, della ricerca di un’identità e di come sia difficile crescere trovando un equilibrio tra le proprie passioni e i compromessi necessari alla sopravvivenza, sullo sfondo di una Berlino vitale e quanto mai affascinante.

Right from the start this was atmospheric, dark, gritty and addictive. If you like the 20-something year old girls trying to figure out what they’re doing in their life trope but make it take place in Berlin, throw in sex and drugs and partying and then sprinkle in some murder, this is the book for Leggi tutto

This novel is intoxicating with its vivid prose and darkly observant characters. Berlin. Parties. Death and recovery . A strangely edgy book that is a joy to read. Best read cold. Highly recommended.
