Di tutte la battaglie combattute da Cesare nelle sue campagne, Alesia è la più celebre. Questo scontro determinante è stato oggetto di un'insolita abbondanza di studi archeologici e ricostruzioni, che il libro vuol presentare ai lettori interessati alla storia militare e dell'antichità. Nel 52 a. C. la conguista e pacificazione della Gallia per opera del condottiero romano si mutò in una repentina e violenta rivolta delle tribù galliche, che trovarono un leader carismatico in un giovane nobile arverno di nome Vercingetorige. Dopo una serie di scontri a Vellaunodunum, Cenabum e Noviodunum, Vercingetorige optò per una strategia di scontri a bassa intensità e manovre difensive, così da tagliare le truppe romane dai loro rifornimenti e minacciarne i movimenti, rischiando di compromettere gravemente il dominio romano in Gallia. Quando il capo gallico scelse di impegnarsi nella difesa della città fortificata di Alesia, erano maturate le condizioni per la battaglia determinante della guerra. Il libro restituisce il contesto bellico e storico dello scontro, prestando particolare cura alla descrizione dei protagonisti, delle truppe, delle strategie e del dettaglio delle tattiche d'assedio e di difesa, anche grazie al supporto delle tavole a colori e delle mappe.

The book is short - Goodreads reports 96 pages, though my copy was 142 pages - and so full of pictures the actual text is short and digestible and could easily be read in one sittin Leggi tutto
Although not long, it is a detailed (as so few information survived) and interesting account of the battle. Also a good contextualization of the years preceding the last struggle. I recommend reading this book together with original the Caesar's Commentaries.
