Londra, 1957. La guerra e le sue privazioni sono passate solo da un decennio e i danni delle bombe sono ancora visibili nel paesaggio londinese. Sulle pagine del North Kent Echo, un piccolo giornale locale, appare un giorno un trafiletto che parla dei progressi negli studi sulla partenogenesi: gli esperimenti compiuti su ricci di mare, rane e conigli fanno ipotizzare che la si possa applicare anche all'uomo. Probabilmente i lettori del North Kent Echo non l'avrebbero nemmeno notato, se non fosse stato per il sensazionale titolo: «I maschi non servono più per la riproduzione!». A seguito dell'articoletto, la redazione viene invasa da una valanga di lettere indignate. Tra di esse ve ne è però una alquanto singolare. A scriverla è una certa Gretchen Tilbury, residente a Sidcup, che dichiara di aver dato alla luce una bimba quando era ancora vergine. L'affermazione suonerebbe priva di qualunque fondamento, se non fosse che, nel lasso di tempo in cui asserisce di aver concepito la figlia per partenogenesi, Gretchen Tilbury era ricoverata presso la clinica St Cecilia di Broadstairs, dove ha trascorso mesi a letto, a causa di una grave forma di artrite reumatoide, dividendo la corsia con altre tre giovani donne, assistite da suore e infermiere. A fare luce sul controverso caso viene inviata Jean Swinney, responsabile delle rubriche di economia domestica e unica donna presente nella redazione del North Kent Echo. Trentanove anni e alle spalle un'esistenza fatta di aspettative deluse, Jean ha imparato da tempo a sopravvivere grazie ai piccoli piaceri quotidiani che la vita concede, quando non è troppo avara. Mentre indaga per scoprire se si tratta di un miracolo o di una frode, Jean stringe, con i Tilbury, un legame destinato a cambiare profondamente la sua esistenza tranquilla e abitudinaria. Ma quale sarà il prezzo da pagare per conoscere la verità?

The novel started to drag a lot from the middle. It also didn't sit right with me that it low-key villainizes queer people. The lesbian relationship felt like an afterthought and solely serves the plot to justify the straight romance. I'm failing to see what this novel wants to say and the messages
