L'aria di Pasadena è «immobile, rovente e profumata» quando Marlowe, sigaretta spenta fra le labbra e cappello calcato sulla fronte, fa il suo ingresso nella sontuosa residenza di Mrs. Elizabeth Murdock. L'incarico che la donna gli prospetta dalla sua chaise-longue di vimini, mentre si scola un bicchiere di porto dopo l'altro, non si direbbe dei più difficili, né dei più pericolosi: ritrovare un'antica e rarissima moneta d'oro - il prezioso doblone Brasher - sottratta alla collezione del defunto marito, probabilmente dalla nuora scomparsa. Ma non appena Marlowe fiuta una pista promettente e sente a portata di mano la soluzione del caso, una serie di omicidi indecifrabili fa calare sull'indagine una fitta coltre di mistero. Per vederci chiaro dovrà spingersi a Bunker Hill - «città vecchia, perduta, fatiscente e piena di balordi» - e frugare palazzi popolati da inquilini sfuggenti, portieri che «sono sempre un po' cani da guardia e un po' ruffiani», «uomini anziani dai volti che sembrano battaglie perse». Niente, comunque, che un detective del suo calibro, armato come sempre di laconico cinismo e un'aria imperturbabile da eroe romantico, non possa affrontare, e come sempre nella sua inimitabile maniera, attraversando la nera notte di Los Angeles fra ricatti, night club, pinte di whisky e segreti celati dal tempo.
