Pubblicato nel 1872, l’anno successivo all’Origine dell’uomo, questo testo darwiniano è rivoluzionario in molti sensi. Nella tesi, innanzitutto, che porta a compimento il lavoro iniziato oltre quarant’anni prima – coi primi abbozzi dell’Origine delle specie – e dimostra la possibilità di analizzare dal punto di vista naturalistico non solo le specie viventi, non solo l’uomo, ma persino i suoi più intimi moti di coscienza, traditi da espressioni emotive che Darwin mette abilmente in continuità con quelle degli altri animali. Ma anche dal punto di vista metodologico il libro è di una modernità sconcertante: il primo a fare ricorso estesamente alla fotografia per scopi scientifici e il primo a basarsi su sondaggi prestampati, pratica ormai comune negli studi di psicologia. Si scopre qui il Darwin della piena maturità, per metà scienziato e per metà filosofo, innovatore rivoluzionario eppure cauto, sempre attento a fondare su basi empiriche più che salde le sue speculazioni.

This book is more a historical document than a scientific paper, by today's requirements for scientific documents. Under-appreciated historic classic and sadly, most updated textbook we have on the subject.
Make sure you read the Paul Ekman-edited new version. Darwin, of course, is a genius, and this book seems so modern so as to be unimpressive for our era.
