Il genio è John Rothstein, scrittore osannato dalla critica e amato dal pubblico - reso immortale dal suo personaggio feticcio Jimmy Gold - che però non pubblica più da vent'anni. L'uomo che lo apostrofa è Morris Bellamy, il suo fan più accanito, piombato a casa sua nel cuore della notte, furibondo non solo perché Rothstein ha smesso di scrivere, ma perché ha fatto finire malissimo il suo adorato Jimmy. Bellamy è venuto a rapinarlo, ma soprattutto a vendicarsi. E così, una volta estorta la combinazione della cassaforte al vecchio autore, si libera di lui facendogli saltare l'illustre cervello. Non sa ancora che oltre ai soldi (tantissimi soldi), John Rothstein nasconde un tesoro ben più prezioso: decine di taccuini con gli appunti per un nuovo romanzo. E non sa che passeranno trent'anni prima che possa recuperarli. A quel punto, però, dovrà fare i conti con Bill Hodges, il detective in pensione eroe melanconico di "Mr. Mercedes", e i suoi inseparabili aiutanti Holly Gibney e Jerome Robinson. Come in "Misery non deve morire", King mette in scena l'ossessione di un lettore per il suo scrittore, un'ossessione spinta fino al limite della follia e raccontata con ritmo serratissimo. "Chi perde paga" è il secondo romanzo della trilogia iniziata con "Mr. Mercedes", nel quale l'autore tocca un tema a lui caro, quello del potere della letteratura sulla vita di ogni giorno, nel bene e nel male.
