Immagina una scuola in cui non c'è spazio per i favoritismi e tutti sono giudicati in base ai risultati. Una scuola in cui gli studenti migliori non vengono rallentati dai mediocri o presi in giro dai bulli. In America, tutto questo è diventato realtà grazie al Q, un quoziente calcolato sulla base di test e sulla condotta, che determina l'istituto da frequentare: gli alunni più brillanti vengono ammessi nelle impegnative Scuole Argento, che assicurano l'ingresso ai college più esclusivi, mentre gli studenti normali rimangono nelle Scuole Verdi. Le «mele marce», invece, sono allontanate dalle famiglie e portate nelle Scuole Gialle, delle strutture isolate dove imparano le materie di base e la disciplina. E per fare in modo che nessuno rinunci a migliorarsi o si sieda sugli allori, i test Q vengono ripetuti ogni mese. Elena Fairchild ha partecipato alla creazione del sistema Q e lo riteneva la chiave per una società più equa, più giusta. Adesso però, dopo alcuni anni come insegnante in una Scuola Argento, è tormentata dai dubbi: sebbene abbia accolto diversi alunni provenienti dalle Scuole Verdi, non ha mai visto qualcuno tornare dalle Scuole Gialle. I genitori ormai temono quel pullmino che passa di casa in casa il giorno successivo all'esame. E ora anche lei è una di quei genitori: sua figlia Freddie ha ottenuto un risultato troppo basso e le verrà portata via. Senza esitare, Elena si fa bocciare al test Q per insegnanti e viene trasferita nella stessa Scuola Gialla della figlia. E lì scoprirà che, quando le persone sono ridotte a numeri, non c'è limite a quello che può succedere a chi non conta più nulla…

Eye rollingly lame. For a dystopia to work it needs to either be so far from possible that it's basically fantasy or close enough to possible to be believable.
