Troppo bella per essere vera. Così sembra a Libby la proposta, del tutto inaspettata, di fare uno scambio di casa per una settimana: una splendida villa, affacciata sul mare selvaggio della Cornovaglia, in cambio del suo piccolo appartamento a Bath. Anche il tempismo non poteva essere migliore. A nove mesi dalle nozze, le cose col marito Jamie non vanno come Libby aveva sperato e pure il lavoro d'insegnante si sta rivelando più frustrante del previsto. E poi c’è quella voglia di scappare, che è diventata sempre più forte da quando una sua foto è comparsa su tutti i giornali, dopo che lei ha salvato uno dei suoi alunni da un incendio divampato a scuola. Da allora, Libby vive nel terrore che quella foto possa spalancare la porta a un passato da cui lei ha cercato disperatamente di fuggire. E i suoi sospetti trovano conferma nel momento in cui arriva in Cornovaglia con Jamie. La sequenza di piccoli incidenti e strane coincidenze è troppo lunga per essere frutto del caso. È possibile che la stiano minacciando? Che quelle presenze sinistre in giardino siano persone che la stanno spiando? Oppure è soltanto la paranoia a rendere Libby sospettosa? La risposta arriva col ritorno a Bath, e non è certo rassicurante. Gli incidenti, infatti, si fanno sempre più gravi e inquietanti. A questo punto Libby non ha più dubbi: qualcuno l'ha trovata. Qualcuno che conosce il suo segreto. E stavolta scappare non servirà a nulla…
