La sua vita e la sua opera letteraria danno testimonianza del suo essere una donna libera, anticonformista ed emancipata. Fu una vita, la sua, scrive Anna Banti, l'eccezionale traduttrice de "La vagabonda" «ricchissima di esperienze che, mentre confermavano nei critici suoi contemporanei una fama di esibizionistica spregiudicatezza, favorirono una sua ascesa non solo letteraria e poetica, ma saggiamente, lucidamente morale». E Colette sembra rispecchiarsi in Renée Neré, la protagonista de "La vagabonda", «gioiello di romanzo breve, che più che un romanzo d'amore è la celebrazione della rinunzia all'uomo», al matrimonio, alla sicurezza, al calore di un focolare domestico, in nome di una libertà insopprimibile. La scelta di Renée, certo, è dolorosa e la sua virtù è crudele, «oserei dire una virtù giansenista».

I went into this not really knowing what to expect but The Vagabond is a beautifully written novel about Renee- a woman in her early 30's who is divorced from her abusive, philandering husband and now works as a performer.
