"Comma 22 (Catch-22)" ha rappresentato dal momento della sua pubblicazione una feroce critica alla guerra al punto che l'espressione "Comma 22" è entrata nell'immaginario collettivo come sinonimo dell'assurdità di tutti i conflitti. Ambientato in Italia durante la Seconda guerra mondiale, è la storia di Yossarian, antieroico bombardiere americano, ossessionato dall'idea che migliaia di nemici sconosciuti, ai quali personalmente non ha fatto nulla, vogliano porre fine ai suoi giorni senza un reale motivo. Ma la seccatura più grande non sono i nemici quanto il suo esercito che non fa che intensificare gli sforzi bellici e seguire zelantemente la disciplina marziale. Il numero delle missioni sembra crescere esponenzialmente e Yossarian e gli altri commilitoni si troveranno a fare i conti con l'ambizione e il cinismo dei loro superiori. Pubblicato per la prima volta nel 1961, il romanzo è stato universalmente riconosciuto come il capolavoro della letteratura antimilitarista di tutti i tempi, per la rappresentazione grottesca della retorica militare e per la chiave di lettura paradossale della guerra. Molti dei pacifisti che manifestavano davanti alla Casa Bianca ai tempi della guerra del Vietnam portavano appunto una spilla con lo slogan "Yossarian vive". Dal romanzo è stato tratto l'omonimo film di Mike Nichols del 1970 e nel 2019 la serie TV "Catch-22" diretta, prodotta e interpretata da George Clooney.
