Due coppie si incontrano casualmente nella torrida atmosfera di una città di mare. Mary e Colin, turisti inglesi legati da un tranquillo rapporto in cui "il piacere stava soprattutto nell'amichevole mancanza di fretta, nella familiarità dei rituali e delle procedure", si imbattono in un personaggio inquietante, Robert. Dai monologhi di lui, che si snodano lungo il filo di un crescendo inarrestabile, emerge un passato di sottomissione nei confronti del padre e di sottili crudeltà domestiche. Caroline, la fragile moglie di Robert, che sembra votata all'autodistruzione, è il quarto personaggio del romanzo e su di lei aleggia un presentimento: prigioniera, più che padrona, della casa in cui si preparano agli ospiti cortesie speciali.
