Sally Porter apre gli occhi in un letto d’ospedale. Non ha nessun ricordo della sera precedente né di come sia finita lì. Tuttavia in Sally albergano altre due personalità, che prendono di volta in volta il sopravvento e la spingono a comportarsi in maniera bizzarra: Derry, la cameriera gentile e affabile con tutti, e Bella, la seduttrice. Sconvolta da quella rivelazione, Sally chiede aiuto al dottor Roger Ash, un esperto di personalità multipla. Per il dottor Ash, l’unica soluzione è fondere le diverse personalità per dare vita alla «quinta Sally», una Sally finalmente unita e completa. Si tratta di un procedimento complesso e doloroso, in cui Sally dovrà rivivere i traumi che hanno causato la scissione e accettarli come parte integrante del suo passato. Ma non sarà facile nemmeno per Roger Ash, perché le ombre nascoste nel labirinto della psiche di quella donna così tormentata ed enigmatica lo costringeranno ad affrontare anche i suoi demoni…

Do you know that feeling when a character does something but you are the one feeling embarrassed, ashamed even? For a strong half of this book that's what I felt. I thought it would be something different. It was surprisingly an easy read, I literally flew through it. But at the same time, something was missing for me. It felt kinda strange. It was a fictional story about a woman with 5 personalities. It was tame compared to the real life accounts. The Billy Mulligan book he wrote was more exciting.
